PROCESS OVERVIEW

Choreographing a Safe Service Modernization

Modernizing an electrical service requires synchronized cooperation across three separate entities: the licensed electrical contractor, the local municipal building department, and the electric utility provider (Eversource or United Illuminating). Understanding this workflow helps property owners plan accordingly.

Timeline Notice: Exact project duration depends on utility engineering review, local inspection scheduling, material availability, and weather conditions. Contractors coordinate the process but cannot guarantee same-day restoration or utility crew arrival times.

The Six-Phase Service Modernization Flow

Site Assessment & Load Evaluation

The Master Electrician surveys the property, reviews existing equipment, calculates demand loads under NEC Article 220, and determines whether an overhead or underground configuration is appropriate.

Utility Work Order & Engineering Review

The contractor initiates a formal work order with Eversource or UI Electric Service Engineering to verify transformer capacity, confirm meter placement rules, and determine available fault current.

Municipal Trade Permitting

A trade permit is secured through the local building department (e.g. Waterbury, Watertown, Danbury, Torrington). Permitting ensures work is legally registered and backed by the contractor's State Unlimited Master credential (E-1).

Service Isolation & Reconstruction

On the scheduled project date, utility or authorized personnel isolate power. The old panel and meter socket are safely removed; new commercial-grade equipment, service entrance conductors, ground rods, and bonding are installed.

Municipal Cut-In Inspection

The municipal building official inspects the installation, verifying conductor sizing, breaker torques, grounding electrode integrity, and working clearances, then transmits "Cut-In" clearance to the utility.

Utility Reconnection & Meter Installation

Upon receiving municipal clearance, the utility crew connects permanent drops, installs and seals the digital meter, and energizes the modernized service.
