How deep do electrical conduits and underground wires need to be buried in Connecticut?
Underground depths in Connecticut are governed by NEC Table 300.5 minimum burial depth standards. (1) Direct-burial UF-B cable requires 24 inches of soil cover. (2) Schedule 40 or 80 PVC conduit requires 18 inches of cover. (3) Rigid metal conduit (RMC) requires only 6 inches in lawn areas. (4) A 120V branch circuit protected by a 20A GFCI breaker can be buried at 12 inches. Under residential driveways, all cables require 24 inches (or 18 inches in conduit under 2 inches of concrete).
What electrical requirements are needed for a hot tub installation in Connecticut?
Under NEC Article 680, an outdoor hot tub requires: (1) A dedicated 240V 50A or 60A 4-wire circuit (two hots, insulated neutral, and insulated green copper ground), (2) An outdoor emergency maintenance disconnect box with Class A GFCI protection located within sight of the spa, between 5 and 50 feet away from the water edge, and (3) Equipotential bonding using a solid #8 AWG bare copper wire connected to all metal structural fittings, pump motors, and metal within 5 feet.
Does a detached garage or workshop need its own ground rods?
Yes. Under NEC 250.32, when an electrical subpanel is installed in a detached building fed from the main house, a separate grounding electrode system (typically dual 8-foot copper ground rods driven 6 feet apart) must be installed at the detached building. In the subpanel, the equipment grounding bus is bonded to the enclosure and ground rods, but the neutral bus must remain completely isolated and unbonded (floating neutral) with no bonding screw installed.
Can I run just one circuit to a backyard shed for lights and tools?
Under NEC 225.30, a detached building is permitted to be supplied by only ONE branch circuit or feeder. If you only need basic lighting and convenience outlets, a single 120V 20A GFCI-protected circuit is legal and can be buried at 12 to 18 inches. However, if you plan to add a space heater, air compressor, table saw, or EV charger, you cannot add a second independent circuit; instead, you must install a multi-circuit feeder to a dedicated subpanel.
