3-Pole vs. 4-Pole ATS: Preventing Nuisance Ground-Fault Trips

One of the most dangerous design errors in commercial standby generator installations is pairing a 3-pole automatic transfer switch with a service entrance equipped with Ground Fault Protection of Equipment (GFPE). This causes the main breaker to trip instantly during generator testing or cutover.

3-Pole ATS (Solid Neutral)

Non-Separately Derived

The generator neutral is connected solidly through the transfer switch to the utility neutral. The generator neutral is not bonded to ground at the generator skid.

Single Ground Point: Neutral-to-ground bond exists exclusively at the utility service entrance main disconnect.
× GFPE Risk: On 480Y/277V services with Ground Fault Protection, unbalanced load return current divides between the solid neutral and the equipment grounding conductor, returning through the utility neutral sensor and falsely tripping the main utility breaker.

4-Pole ATS (Switched Neutral)

Separately Derived System

The fourth pole of the transfer switch physically disconnects the neutral conductor. The generator is classified as a Separately Derived System (NEC 250.30) with its own dedicated bonding jumper and grounding electrode.

Complete Isolation: Utility neutral and generator neutral are never tied together simultaneously, completely eliminating stray circulating neutral ground currents.
GFPE Protection Safe: Ground Fault Protection of Equipment sensors on both the utility service entrance and the generator operate accurately with zero false trips.

What is the difference between NEC Article 700, 701, and 702 commercial generator systems?
NEC Article 700 governs Emergency Systems essential for human life safety (exit signs, emergency illumination, fire pumps), mandating that power must be restored within 10 seconds of utility outage through dedicated raceways. NEC Article 701 covers Legally Required Standby Systems (sewage lift stations, communications, ventilation) requiring restoration within 60 seconds. NEC Article 702 covers Optional Standby Systems protecting commercial assets, server racks, commercial refrigeration, and assembly lines from economic loss.
When does a commercial facility require a 4-pole ATS instead of a 3-pole ATS?
A 4-pole switched-neutral Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) is required when the building has a solidly grounded 480Y/277V service with Ground Fault Protection of Equipment (GFPE, required on services rated 1000A or greater per NEC 230.95), and the generator is configured as a Separately Derived System with its own neutral-to-ground bond. Switching the neutral breaks the physical connection between utility and generator neutrals, preventing stray circulating ground currents that cause false trips on the utility GFPE breaker.
