3-Pole vs. 4-Pole ATS: Preventing Nuisance Ground-Fault Trips
One of the most dangerous design errors in commercial standby generator installations is pairing a 3-pole automatic transfer switch with a service entrance equipped with Ground Fault Protection of Equipment (GFPE). This causes the main breaker to trip instantly during generator testing or cutover.
3-Pole ATS (Solid Neutral)
Non-Separately DerivedThe generator neutral is connected solidly through the transfer switch to the utility neutral. The generator neutral is not bonded to ground at the generator skid.
4-Pole ATS (Switched Neutral)
Separately Derived SystemThe fourth pole of the transfer switch physically disconnects the neutral conductor. The generator is classified as a Separately Derived System (NEC 250.30) with its own dedicated bonding jumper and grounding electrode.
